Following the WordPress Community team recommendations for event organizers in light of COVID-19 (https://make.wordpress.org/community/2020/03/11/new-recommendations-for-event-organizers-in-light-of-covid-19/) and the public events lockdown in Uganda ( https://www.yowerikmuseveni.com/fourth-address-covid19 ), we are sadly postponing our earlier scheduled March Meetup on Choosing and Customising WordPress themes. At this time, we have tentatively postponed the meetup to Saturday 13th June 2020, but as usual, we’ll keep a watchful eye on the news related to COVID-19 update the Meetup page closer to the date.

Apologies to all those who look forward to the meetup each month, but based on the most recent advice for managing this Pandemic, self-isolation, and social distancing are two of the most important things everyone can do at the moment, to help prevent the spread of this virus. And of course, always practice good hygiene and make sure you wash your hands.

Good hygiene includes:
– Covering your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue
– Disposing of tissues properly
– Washing your hands often with soap and water, including before and after eating and after going to the toilet
– Using alcohol-based hand sanitisers
– Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces
– If you are sick, avoiding contact with others and staying more than 1.5 metres away from people

Most beginners feel overwhelmed when it comes to selecting a theme for their WordPress site. There are thousands of free and paid options. Each theme looks better than the other. How do you choose the best theme for your WordPress site?

You need find the right theme for your specific needs – it should have the functionality required for your project. Check the options offered by the theme before creating a child theme. Does it offer the basic appearance and sense of what you need? For example, if it’s an ecommerce site you’re building, check for ecommerce functionality; if you want to include testimonials, make sure that functionality is already integrated. This is especially important if you’re a newbie. Finding a theme that already comes with the features you need will save a ton of time.

After selecting your perfect theme, you will need to customize it to appear the way you envisioned it. It is possible to customize any WP theme using the inbuilt customizer.
